Forecast Sharply Raised
In May 2026, Omdia, a leading international semiconductor research firm, released its latest report raising its forecast for 2026 global semiconductor market revenue growth from the previous 45% to 62.7%. The revision reflects unprecedented momentum in the DRAM and NAND Flash markets, driven by sustained explosive demand for AI computing and a supply shortage expected to persist through the end of the year.
According to the report, total global semiconductor revenue in 2026 is expected to break through the 800 billion US dollar mark, with memory contributing the largest share of the increase. Pulled by demand for HBM (high-bandwidth memory) and server DDR5, the DRAM market is projected to grow more than 80% for the full year, while the NAND Flash market, lifted by surging enterprise SSD demand, is projected to grow more than 50%.
AI Demand as the Core Driver
Training of large AI models is driving exponential growth in demand for memory bandwidth and capacity. Take the NVIDIA H200 GPU as an example: a single card carries 141GB of HBM3e, so a single eight-GPU server uses more than 1TB of HBM. With global AI server shipments expected to grow to 75,000 racks in 2026 (up from 29,000 in 2025), HBM demand is set to rise more than 150% year over year.
On the server DRAM side, an AI server typically carries 2-4TB of DDR5 memory per system, far above the 256-512GB of a conventional server. Demand for DDR5 RDIMMs and LRDIMMs is climbing rapidly, and some high-capacity configurations (such as 64GB and 128GB single modules) are already in tight supply.
Supply-Side Capacity Expansion Falls Short
Although Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron — the three major memory makers — are all expanding capacity aggressively, the ramp of HBM and advanced-node DRAM output still cannot keep pace with demand growth. HBM3e manufacturing is exceptionally complex, requiring stacks of twelve or more dies and TSV (through-silicon via) technology, and yield improvement takes time.
