Supply Side: Constrained Capacity Expansion
The industry downturn of 2024-2025 led the major NAND makers to cut capital expenditure sharply and postpone construction of new production lines. Entering 2026, demand has recovered strongly, but restoring capacity takes 12-18 months, leaving supply elasticity severely limited.
On the technology front, the 3D NAND layer race has entered the 200+ layer era (Samsung V9 at 236 layers, Micron G9 at 276 layers), but the yield challenges and equipment investment pressure that come with high layer counts are slowing effective capacity growth. Meanwhile, QLC (quad-level cell) improves storage density per unit area, but its endurance limitations keep it from fully displacing TLC in the enterprise market.
Demand Side: AI and Data Centers Drive Growth
AI training and inference workloads are driving explosive demand for high-performance SSDs. A single AI training server is typically configured with 50-100TB of NVMe SSD for dataset storage and model checkpoints. As AI server shipments grow rapidly, enterprise SSD consumption of NAND Flash is rising sharply.
In addition, continuing smartphone storage upgrades (flagship models now ship with 512GB-1TB as standard), the migration of PC SSD capacities from 512GB toward 1-2TB, and automotive storage demand driven by vehicle intelligence are together pushing NAND Flash demand upward across the board.
Price Outlook
Taking supply and demand together, NAND Flash contract prices are expected to keep rising throughout 2026: roughly 10-15% per quarter in Q1-Q2, potentially narrowing to 5-10% per quarter in the second half as some new capacity comes online, for a cumulative full-year increase in the 30-50% range.
With circulating inventory low, spot market prices will swing more sharply, placing higher demands on distributors' channel resources and inventory management capabilities.
