The New Normal of Supply Chain Risk
The global chip shortage of 2020-2023 was a wake-up call for the entire electronics manufacturing industry. The automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics sectors lost hundreds of billions of dollars in output value to chip supply disruptions. Although supply conditions have eased since 2024, geopolitical tensions, extreme weather events, and surging AI demand have made semiconductor supply chain uncertainty the "new normal."
Supplier Diversification
Supplier diversification is the first strategy for building supply chain resilience. For critical components, we recommend maintaining at least 2-3 qualified suppliers to avoid over-reliance on any single source.
Implementation should follow several principles: prefer suppliers in different geographic regions to spread geopolitical risk; ensure that alternate suppliers' products pass full quality certification and application validation; and establish a supplier performance evaluation system that regularly assesses delivery capability, quality, and technical support.
Safety Stock Strategy
Sensible safety stock is an essential buffer against supply disruptions. For critical components with long lead times (over 16 weeks), difficult substitution, and high business impact, we recommend holding 3-6 months of safety stock; for commodity components, stock levels can be reduced, but 1-2 months of safety stock should still be maintained.
Long-Term Agreements and Alternate-Part Validation
Signing long-term supply agreements (LTAs) with key suppliers locks in capacity and pricing and reduces supply uncertainty. Alternate-part validation is an equally important element of resilience building. JH Semiconductor offers customers systematic alternate-part validation services — electrical parameter benchmarking, package compatibility analysis, application circuit verification, and reliability testing — helping customers build a robust approved vendor list (AVL).
