Link rate is not application performance
PCI-SIG states that PCIe 4.0 supports 16.0 GT/s of raw bandwidth per lane per direction and PCIe 5.0 supports 32.0 GT/s. That is link capability. Real workloads also depend on protocol overhead, SSD controller and NAND parallelism, CPU/NUMA topology, queues and thermal policy.
Six upgrade checks
- Confirm end-to-end support across CPU, motherboard, riser, backplane, cabling and slot configuration.
- Prove the workload is throughput-constrained rather than CPU, network or software constrained.
- Validate steady-state thermals, not only short benchmarks.
- Compare latency percentiles and stable QoS where service responsiveness matters.
- Match endurance and capacity to the write profile.
- Manage firmware, BIOS, drivers and recovery validation in a pilot environment.
Recommended test sequence
Run baseline link validation, workload-like stress, long enough steady-state testing, then recovery drills. Capture temperature, power, error counters and performance at every stage.
